Fashion Waves 2011
Can you feel that we are in the full swing of Fashion Show season?
Today the fashion-gypsies crowd London, tomorrow they’ll be seen in Milan and Paris. What new fun ideas does this glamorous circus bring? What is the current mode-mood?
Fashion is like a wave with crests – which are the trendy gimmicks (“for Spring let’s wear green lipstick!”) and amplitude – which is about value and power (red lipstick never goes out of style!). It will be fun to watch how this season develops and figure out what will feel inspiring for the next six months or perhaps longer. I’m already observing that the main wave is bringing a sense of “polish” to the scene, overtaking the tan, sexy, tousled-hair-and-accidental-beauty-look. The hot Bardot is cooling off. The skin is pale, the hair is placed, there’s lipstick.
Another wave that is cresting is the 70’s-retro-glam. Versions of this will have staying power (that’s right, amplitude) for the simple reason that so many fashion addicts, groupies and average folk are yearning for an anti-minimal makeup statement. The romantic women of London’s iconic BIBA store, Guy Bourdin’s naughty girls or Helmut Newton’s glamazons suggest elegance, decadence and mystery, which women desperately need today.
