What!? Discontinued!?

Written By: Brigitte on October 28, 2009 3 Comments

I was doing an interview for a magazine about my 12 favorite products – which I happily provided the journalist with – when she called me back informing me that three of them had been discontinued!!!! What? Shock and consternation. We get attached to a particular product over the years and suddenly it is brutally yanked from our makeup bag. On a rare occasion the coveted item reappears in a different packaging, sometimes it comes back in a lesser version of itself. Most of the time, one has to accept the fact that it is simply gone forever. Even though I talk a tough game and teach my assistants not to depend on favorite products because talent should rely on ability and not on brand items, I secretly suffer and seethe.

I commend two brands for being sensitive to their customers emotional attachment to doomed items: Estee Lauder, who provides a service that will keep a product in a “library”, and MAC (also an Estee Lauder brand) who has the decency to post a warning about what products will meet their demise on their website. For all desperate people out there, my talented friends at 3 Custom Color can replicate in one way or another a number of products if you provide them with a sample.

There are also several websites that specialize in selling discontinued products. I was recently mourning the termination of my favorite mascara, Lash Stylist by Maybelline (that comb did a brilliant job on many a famous lash on my photo shoots). Why Maybelline would discontinue such a brilliant product is a mystery to me. Anyhow, after searching the net on a regular basis, I just found it on http://buymebeauty.com and was able to hoard enough wands to last me for a while. Lucky thing that an unopened mascara can keep quite well. A lipstick would not fare as well. In conclusion, it’s good to know that there are a few options available for all makeup junkies who fear withdrawal symptoms. Another way to look at it is that this is opportunity to find a new, fantastic, magical product…..and hope it doesn’t get discontinued for a while.

Hi. Sorry for your disappointment of makeup products being discontinued. I recently came across a line that can re-create your favorite discontinued product. It’s called Bespoke. All’s you have to provide is the product/color or you can just send them a pic! Or they even take it a step further, and you can just provide a pic of the color you think it resembles and they will reproduce it!

    Hope this helps!
